Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder which results from the experience of a terrifying trauma considered to be outside the range of normal human experience. (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) It can also result from long-term chronic exposure to a severe stressor, for example soldiers who endure ongoing battles (the disorder was originally known as ‘shell shock’).
Anxiety disorders are highly treatable with psychological therapies, medication, or both. However the most effective treatment will depend on each individual person’s needs and associated genetic and environmental factors.
Early treatment improves prognosis and limits resulting social and occupational impairment. While anxiety is a natural aspect of human existence, factors that contribute to excessive levels of anxiety can be managed and ‘unlearned’.
